Feng Yi & Fu Wa were renamed Liang Liang & Xing Xing
At the launch of the Giant Panda Conservation Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that Fu Wa, the male panda, had been renamed Xing Xing and Feng Yi as Liang Liang, which means which means ‘prosperity’ and ‘pretty’ respectively.
“The pandas now have two names – one given by China and the other given by Malaysia,” he said.
The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry had organised a contest to suggest new names for the two pandas and received some 2,000 suggestions.
The pandas arrived in Malaysia on May 21 to commemorate 40 years of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China.
Malaysia will be Xing Xing’s and Liang Liang’s home for the next 10 years.
