After careful monitoring by Toronto Zoo staff, Er Shun showed signs of being in heat this past weekend, which only happens once a year for giant pandas. In preparation of Da Mao not being mature enough to become a father just yet, giant panda semen was airlifted directly from China for the possibility of artificial insemination. Late Sunday night, a Toronto Zoo team, alongside Mr. Liu Yu Yang, a seasoned Chinese reproductive biologist, performed the first giant panda artificial insemination in Canada.
