Pandas for Edinburgh 's babies
To commemorate the exciting day that their two Giant Pandas arrived in Scotland, Edinburgh Zoo treated babies born on Sunday 4th December to cuddly panda toys.
All mothers who gave birth at the Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and St John’s Hospital in Livingston on the celebratory day were presented with the cute black and white furry friends for their babies.
In total around 25 babies were born at the Simpson Centre, and 5 boy babies and 3 girl babies at St Johns.
The first little panda baby born at St John’s Hospital in Livingston was a boy born at 1.23am.
Maria Wilson, Chief Midwife, NHS Lothian said: “It was lovely to be able to hand the little cuddly pandas to our mum’s that had just given birth – they were all delighted with the gift.”
New Dad Mike Nicklas said: “My wife Leeanne and I would like to express our thanks to the Zoo for the lovely gift of panda cub teddies for our twin boys, Rory Ramsay Nicklas and Alexander James Nicklas, born on 4th December at 18:04 and 18:17 (photo). Both weighted just over five pounds at birth and mother and babies are doing very well. We look forward to taking the boys to visit the giant pandas at Edinburgh Zoo when they are old enough, and you never know, by then the pandas may even have babies of their own!”
A spokesperson for Edinburgh Zoo commented: “It’s delightful to think that lots of babies were born across the two hospitals on the day the giant pandas arrived in Scotland. We hope the babies enjoy their cuddly panda toys when they’re a little older, and the fact they were born on the day the giant pandas arrived in Scotland is certainly something for the new parents to tell their little ones when they grow up.
“Hopefully the high number of births on the day Tian Tian and Yang Guang arrived in Scotland is a good omen for the pitter patter of tiny panda feet.”
