On November 19, 2011 I took the fast train from Chengdu to ChongQing to visit the pandas at ChongQing Zoo. After a 2-hours luxurious train ride I arrived in ChongQing. A new subway opened earlier this year, which took me to the ‘dong wu yuan’ (zoo in Chinese) subway station.
Keeper Zhang Qi showed me around ChongQing Zoo’s Panda Enclosures.
The Zoo was established in 1955 and has a rich panda history. Their first giant panda arrived at April 29, 1960.
They have currently 8 giant pandas in their collection, which each live in large panda yards.
The first area of ChongQing Zoo’s panda exhibit has 4 yards. Here live Er Shun, Lan Xiang, Liang Liang & Xin Xing.
Er Shun (male) was born on August 10, 2007 at the ChongQing Zoo.
His mother is Ya Ya (Yalaoer) and his father is Ling Ling.
Lan Xiang (female) was born on July 12, 2002 in Wolong.
Her mother is Ying Ying and her father is Da Di.
She was loaned to ChongQing Zoo on November 30, 2003.
Liang Liang (male) was born on August 10, 2000 in Wolong.
His mother is Ying Ying and his father is Da Di.
He is the twin brother of Tiergarten Schönbrunn / Zoo Vienna’s Yang Yang.
He moved to ChongQing Zoo on June 15, 2007.
Xin Xing (female) was wild born approximately in August 1982.
She arrived at the ChongQing Zoo on June 19, 1983.
She stayed inside her sleeping room during my visit.
After these 4 yards we can walk down on a stairs and see one panda yard near the gift shop. Here lives You You.
You You (male) was born on September 5, 2006 at the ChongQing Zoo.
His mother is Ya Ya (Yalaoer) and his father is Ling Ling.
When we take another stairs down at the gift shop there are 4 more panda yards.
Here live Chuan Xing & Ya Ya (Yalaoer) and her cub.
Chuan Xing (female) was born on July 18, 1992 at the ChongQing Zoo.
Her mother is Xin Xing and her father is Chuan Chuan.
She lived at the Yongin Everland Zoo in South Korea from September 1994 until January 1999.
Ya Ya (Ya Laoer) (female) was born on September 9, 1999 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Her mother is Ya Ya and her father is Ha Lan. She is the twin sister of Yalaoda.
She moved to ChongQing Zoo on April 6, 2001.
Ya Ya gave birth to twins on September 4, 2011. Ya Ya was in the nursery with one of her cubs. Unfortunately, the second cub died. Here you can Ya Ya and her cub on the monitoring system.
After I had spent some time with the pandas, I had to catch my train back to Chengdu.
A day goes by so fast when I’m around pandas…
