The Chiang Mai Zoo Panda Staff carried out an artificial insemination on Lin Hui on September 28 with fresh semen and on September 29, 2013 with frozen semen.
Lin Hui came unexpected in heat at an unusual time. She showed behavior by being nervous, bleating, exploring around and scent marking. The researchers did follow-up tests to monitor estrogen and progesterone hormone level and it indicated that ovulation had occurred. Chinese officials gave the permission to Project Panda In Thailand to extract Chuang Chuang’s semen and to perform AI on Lin Hui.
The Chiang Mai Zoo hopes that a second panda cub will be born in Thailand in 2014.
Boripat Siriaroonrat, assistant director of the Bureau of Conservation Research and Education, said the research team had the best plan for completing the artificial insemination and Chuang Chuang’s sperm was of high quality.
