On August 4th, 2011, Qi Zhen gave birth to the first set of twin cubs at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Qi Zhen is 12 years old.
The Chengdu Panda Base launched a naming campaign through Chengdu city’s official Tencent micro-blog (http://cd.qq.com/, http://t.qq.com/wechengdu). The campaign called, “Love Chengdu, Love Hometown, Let Me Name Giant Panda Cubs”, invited Tencent’s micro-bloggers to submit a pair of names for the twin giant panda cubs. Over two million micro-bloggers paid close attention to the submissions, with nearly twenty thousand micro-bloggers taking part with more than 3,000 unique names submitted.
All of the names submitted expressed Tencent’s micro-blogging community’s wishes for the good health and happiness of the two cubs. Ten finalists were chosen. Names finalists submitted included Shu Qi & Shu Zhen, Qi Long & Zhen Feng, Zhen Zhen & Qiao Qiao.
Tencent’s micro-bloggers responded to the call to vote on names with great enthusiasm. Between August 18th and the 23rd, nearly 3,000 votes were cast. In accordance with the rules of the naming, the Chengdu Panda Base had the final say in the naming of the cubs. The Chengdu Panda Base agreed with the names Zhen Zhen & Qiao Qiao. The identity of the micro-blogger who submitted the winning name combination will be announced soon.
The winner will receive a present from the Chengdu Panda Base, and will be invited to join in the month-long celebration of the cubs Zhen Zhen & Qiao Qiao.
