Breeding giant pandas is very difficult. What should you know about giant panda breeding?
* Giant Pandas reach sexual maturity around the age of five.
* Panda mating season is in spring.
* Females go into their estrus cycle only once a year and it lasts for two or three days.
* Gestation period ranges from 83 to 200 days.
* Cubs are born in an extremely immature stage of development
* Cubs weigh only 54 to 225 grams when they are born, about 1/800 of the mother’s weight.
* Researchers in China became experts in Artificial Insemination.
* The first AI success with fresh sperm was booked in 1978, the first success with frozen sperm in 1980.
* If twins are born (60% of all birth), usually only one survives in the wild.
* In Chengdu, they have invented a technique of cub swapping. The mother takes care of one cub while the other one is in an incubator. This technique increased the survival rate of the cubs.
* Cubs stay with their mothers for 18 months.
