Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo said Monday that Ri Ri & Shin Shin, the two giant pandas kept at the zoo have mated, while deciding to suspend showing them to the public until Tuesday to observe their condition.
The zoo said it confirmed the male panda Ri Ri and the female panda Shin Shin had mated at an outdoor enclosure after Shin Shin showed signs of excitement in a matchmaking meeting on Sunday.
The zoo said it will decide on whether the pandas will be shown to the public from Wednesday after observing their condition on Tuesday.
If they produce a baby panda, it will be the first baby born at Ueno Zoo since 1988.
