Zoo Vienna's Yang Yang has started painting to crowd-fund panda book project
Yang Yang, the female panda at Tiergarten Schönbrunn / Zoo Vienna, has recently took to working with paints and brushes. She has started to paint small ‘works of art’ using a bamboo brush that was made especially for her. She not only enjoys it, the works have now also been made available on the Startnext crowd-funding platform at www.startnext.com/pandas. This means that Yang Yang is helping Daniel Zupanc – the photographer at the zoo – who is planning the production of an illustrated book about the pandas at Schönbrunn for all the fans of these black-and-white bears. “We want to present the most beautiful photos of the pandas at Schönbrunn in an illustrated book that’s to be published in German and English. I want to share her whole story: from the first negotiations with China about sending Yang Yang and Long Hui to Vienna in 2003 right up to the raising of the twins Fu Feng and Fu Ban now,” Daniel Zupanc says speaking about the project.
Yang Yang will paint exactly 100 pictures. The unique ‘works of art’ are to be sold with a certificate of authenticity for 490.00 euro. Yang Yang paints at a wire screen behind the scenes to which she goes as soon as she feels like painting. She’s then given the brush and the sheet of paper is held for her. Her works are painted in black-and-white entirely in keeping with the giant pandas’ colouring. “Yang Yang really enjoys painting. She often can’t wait to get hold of the brush as soon as it’s within reach and off she goes,” Eveline Dungl says, who’s the zoologist who supervises the painting at the zoo. “She’ll even paint several pictures at once when she feels like it. And then she’ll take a break to get her reward of carrots and sweet potatoes. Her style always varies: from lively to subtle.”
A total of 25,000.00 euro is needed to finance the illustrated book. It’s hoped that it can be published in December if the sum required is reached by 9 October 2018. Daniel has been working with the zoo to come up with other exclusive special offers that have also been put up on Startnext. It will, of course, be possible for patrons to acquire the book at a special price; they’ll even be able to have their name immortalised in the book or have it signed by Yang Yang. Framed sticks of bamboo that the pandas at Schönbrunn have nibbled on will also be available, an exclusive Behind-the-Scenes tour and much more. “I’ve been photographing the pandas for more than 10 years. This book is my dream,” Daniel says. Johanna Bukovsky, who is the press officer at Schönbrunn, will be responsible for writing the book and so will be interviewing everyone who’s involved with the pandas and asking them for their personal anecdotes, behind-the-scenes information about their care and everything else of interest that concerns the pandas.
Panda-Weibchen Yang Yang im Tiergarten Schönbrunn greift neuerdings zu Pinsel und Farbe. Mit einem eigens gebastelten Bambus-Pinsel malt sie kleine „Kunstwerke“. Das macht ihr nicht nur großen Spaß, die Werke sind auch ab sofort auf der Crowdfunding-Plattform Startnext unter www.startnext.com/pandas erhältlich. Damit unterstützt Yang Yang den Zoofotografen Daniel Zupanc, der einen Bildband über die Schönbrunner Pandas für all ihre Fans machen möchte. „Der Bildband soll die schönsten Fotos der Pandas aus Schönbrunn zeigen und zweisprachig auf Deutsch/Englisch erscheinen. Er wird ihre komplette Geschichte erzählen: von den ersten Verhandlungen mit China über die Ankunft des Panda-Pärchens Yang Yang und Long Hui 2003 in Wien bis hin zu den aktuellen Zwillingen Fu Feng und Fu Ban“, so Zupanc.
Yang Yang wird exakt 100 Bilder malen. Die Unikate werden um 490 Euro mit Echtheitszertifikat geliefert. Gemalt wird an einem Gitter hinter den Kulissen, an das Yang Yang kommt, sobald sie Lust hat. Hier kann ihr der Pinsel gereicht und das Blatt Papier gehalten werden. Passend zu den Großen Pandas malt sie schwarz auf weiß. „Yang Yang macht das Malen großen Spaß. Sie kann es oft kaum erwarten, zum Pinsel zu greifen, sobald er in Reichweite ist und schon geht es los“, berichtet Zoologin Eveline Dungl, die das Malen betreut. „Wenn sie Muße hat, malt sie sogar mehrere Bilder hintereinander. Dazwischen holt sie sich Karotten und Süßkartoffeln als Belohnung. Ihr Stil ist immer unterschiedlich: von schwungvoll bis dezent.“
25.000 Euro sind für die Finanzierung des Bildbandes nötig. Wird die Summe bis 9. Oktober 2018 erreicht, erscheint er im Dezember. Zupanc hat sich mit Unterstützung des Tiergartens noch weitere exklusive Besonderheiten überlegt, die auf Startnext erhältlich sind. Erstmals gibt es eine Backstage-Führung zu den Pandas sowie gerahmte Bambus-Stäbe mit Bissspuren der Tiere. Natürlich kann man sich das Buch zum Vorzugspreis sichern, aber auch seinen Namen im Buch verewigen oder sich das Buch von Yang Yang signieren lassen. Zupanc: „Ich fotografiere die Pandas seit über zehn Jahren. Dieses Buch ist mein Traum.“ Für die Texte wird Zoo-Pressesprecherin Johanna Bukovsky alle Personen rund um die Pandas interviewen, ihnen Anekdoten, Einblicke hinter die Kulissen und viel Wissen rund um diese bedrohte Tierart entlocken.
