Macau’s born panda cubs get infant names
Macau’s first locally born panda cubs are putting on weight, which was recorded on Saturday at 167.2 grammes for the first born and at 77.9 grammes for his younger sibling, the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) said in a statement on Sunday.
The cubs are “in good health”, the statement said, adding that both look like two “moving glutinous rice balls with grated coconut”.
The first “made in Macau” panda cubs, both of which are male, were welcomed to the world in Coloane on 26 June, with the elder cub weighing 135 grammes and the younger cub 53.8 grammes at birth.
The statement also said that the twins have been given infant names – Tai Pou and Sio Pou in Cantonese. Tai Pou means big baby or “big treasure” while Sio Pou means little baby or “little treasure”. “Pou” in Cantonese is often used in infant names.
The bureau said last week that Coloane’s Macau Giant Panda Pavilion, which houses the four-member panda family, will be reopened to the public on 12 July, but only the cubs’ father Hoi Hoi will be available for the public to see because the cubs’ mother Sam Sam is still busy looking after the twins.
The bureau has set up a special team to take care of the “big and little treasures” and their mother.
