Tiergarten Schönbrunn’s panda cub Fu Hu has bravely made his first steps outside his nest allowing zoo visitors to see him live for the first time.
During the last weeks the little panda had only been visible from a distance. Zoo director Dagmar Schratter said: “He’s already done some trips outside the box by night but now he’s starting to brave them during the day too. “His over caring mother Yang Yang is a little more unsure however and sometimes carries him back into the nest.”
Schönbrunn’s resident zoologist Eveline Dungl said: “Right now the best chances to see him seem to be between 11am and 2pm. At first, Fu Hu’s appearances will probably be only once a day and quite short.”
Fu Hu who weighs 8.5 kilograms now still sleeps most of the day in his nest but soft straw has already been placed under the logs in the panda compound for him to get his first climbing experiences – without hurting himself if he falls.
